NCC and Dr Maida: Why Nigerians Should Ignore the Distractions – By Ogwu Salifu

In recent weeks, a wave of narratives has emerged in the public space targeting the leadership of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), particularly the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Dr. Aminu Maida. From allegations of bias in staff promotions to purported internal tensions, much of the noise has been amplified by social media and unverified online sources.

However, for discerning Nigerians, it’s important to separate facts from distractions. The NCC remains one of Nigeria’s most respected regulatory institutions, and under the current EVC, the Commission continues to demonstrate focus, transparency, and results-driven leadership.

    A Track Record of Performance

Since assuming office, Dr. Maida has shown commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy. From broadband penetration to digital inclusion and stakeholder engagement, the EVC has prioritized reforms that support economic growth, job creation, and national development.

Under his leadership, the NCC has maintained its independence, resisted political interference, and pursued strategic policies aimed at protecting consumers and investors in the telecoms sector.

    The Noise vs. The Truth

Allegations circulating about internal discontent and lopsided promotions have been thoroughly investigated. A recent report by the National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) cleared the NCC of wrongdoing in its 2025 staff promotion exercise. The council found no evidence of illegality or marginalization, describing the process as merit-based and consistent with public service rules.

Additionally, the so-called protests and media attacks lack the backing of credible facts or reputable institutions. Many of these are driven by individuals with personal interests or external actors seeking to undermine progress.

    Why Nigerians Should Stay Focused

    1. Reform is often resisted. Any serious effort to sanitize or modernize a system will face pushback, especially from those who benefit from the status quo.
    2. The digital economy matters. Distractions that weaken trust in the NCC risk slowing down national progress in key sectors like fintech, communications, and digital infrastructure.
    3. Leadership must be supported, not sabotaged. Constructive criticism is welcome, but Nigerians must guard against being misled by sponsored narratives.

At a time when Nigeria needs strong institutions and visionary leadership, the focus should remain on performance, integrity, and results. Dr. Aminu Maida and the NCC deserve the nation’s support, not distraction. Let’s ignore the noise and back the progress.
